FAMILY ISSUES
Jack (not his real name) was a dedicated technical service engineer, on the road for a lot of the time and away from home for some of the time. Circumstances at his parent’s home where he lived took a turn for the worse with his father being diagnosed with terminal cancer. Anyone who has had the ‘C’ in or around them knows the utter devastation it brings. Focus on work and being away for long periods were becoming a problem for Jack; reluctance to get involved, avoidance, reduced attention to detail… these were the first symptoms I spotted. Jack was a ‘mans man’ and not one for opening up, however when I needed to query his change in approach, he quite quickly opened up his heart to me.
Working with him, and with some special support from HR and at home with MacMillan, we re-arranged work schedules and work loads such that Jack could get home every evening and work from home when he could.
That didn’t make the problem disappear, but it supported him managing his work-life balance and allowed him to focus on the really important things in life.
